When a huge storm is in the forecast, wanting to do everything possible to protect your home is natural. In addition to checking the roof for missing and broken shingles, boarding up the windows if necessary, and purchasing sandbags, there are several other steps to take that prevent mold from forming. Clean Those Gutters

The importance of clean gutters cannot be overstated when it comes to roof maintenance and mold prevention. Gutters clogged with leaves, animal nests, twigs, nuts and seeds, and other organic debris prevent rainwater from flowing off of your roof and away from your home. The water can subsequently do one of two things: back up under roof shingles or pour over the sides of the gutters and pool around your home’s foundation. Both of these issues create conditions ideal for mold growth. 

If it’s been a few months since you cleaned your gutters, check and clean them before the storm hits to maintain a dry, mold-free residence. 

Inspect Basement Windows 

Basement windows featuring cracks or gaps invite rainwater into the subterranean space. Inspect every window your basement includes on the inside and out to make certain it is well-sealed and will not leak. If you notice any gaps or cracks, make the appropriate repairs. Some windows might need caulking and weatherstriping, while others might require glass replacements to protect your home from mold and mildew.

While you are inspecting these windows on the outside, check the grading around your residence. The soil should slope away instead of towards your home to help prevent rainwater infiltrations. 

Check the French Drain on Your Property, If Applicable 

If your property features a French drain, or drain that sends rainwater into a retention pond or the street, you’ll need to inspect it before the storm hits. This drain should be clog-free to ferry rainwater away from your property and avoid issues such as waterlogged soil and grass, mold growth, and insect problems. Remove any organic debris or trash over the drain to help it stay clear. It is also a good idea to rake leaves, twigs, and other debris in close proximity to the drain so it does not clog during the storm.
