One of the numerous keys to preventing mold from flourishing in your home is to control indoor moisture. As moisture, or humidity, increases, so does the risk of a serious mold problem. Review what your Los Angeles mold inspectors recommend to keep the moisture level normal and the detrimental fungus out of your residence.

Clean and Repair the Gutters As Necessary

Clean gutters allow rainwater to flow to the connecting drain pipes…and away from your home. If they become clogged with leaves, twigs, animal nests, and other debris, rainwater either spills down their sides and pools around your foundation or backs up under roof shingles. Both of these issues can cause serious water damage and mold growth. Clean your gutters at least twice a year, such as in the fall and spring, to prevent these problems. If your home is surrounded by trees or you live in a wooded area, clean the gutters more often to maintain a dry home.

It is also a good idea to identify gutter repairs, such as rust-related holes or sagging areas. Quick repairs are necessary to keep your home water damage-free.

Check the Humidity Level Daily Via Dehumidifiers

For most homeowners, dehumidifiers play major mold prevention roles. If you have one or more of these devices in your home, check their humidity readings at least once a day. If the reading is 60% or higher, the risk of mold intensifies. Mold cannot grow when the humidity level is 30% to 50%, or lower. If the reading is high, take recommended steps such as emptying the dehumidifiers so they can function at optimal levels, turning on the air conditioning system, and using fans.

Act Quickly When Water Spills or There is a Leak

Failing to clean up a spill or allowing a leak to go unchecked dramatically increases the chance of mold growth. Act in a speedy manner when either of these issues crop up to keep your home dry and mold-free. As long as you take action 24 to 48 hours after a spill or leak, it is unlikely that mold will grow.
