If you want to store your recreational vehicle, or RV, this winter, keeping it mold-free is a maintenance essential. Mold feeds on organic materials, such as wooden cabinets and leather seats, causing them to break down prematurely. Such issues are in addition to allergic reactions such as coughing, wheezing, sneezing, eye watering, throat irritation, and sinus congestion. To help you store your RV without the threat of the detrimental fungi, review what your Orange County mold inspection team recommends.

Clean it Thoroughly

Cleaning your RV from top to bottom prevents mold growth, since the fungus loves to feed on dirt, dust, and grime. In addition to vacuuming and sweeping where applicable, wipe down countertops, tables, cabinets, and other surfaces with a white vinegar-water solution. Use ¼ cup of vinegar for every cup of water to make a non-toxic, mold-killing solution. White vinegar is one of the household products that destroys mold on contact, along with hydrogen peroxide and borax.

Promote Air Circulation

Stagnant air allows mold to thrive. To keep the air moving in your RV during storage, open the hatches if you are storing the vehicle in a climate-controlled garage or storage unit. If the vehicle is being stored under a carport or in an outdoor storage space, keep the hatches closed and use battery-operated fans to circulate the air. Depending on the batteries you use and how long the RV will remain in storage, you might need to replace them after a few months.

Blow Out the Freshwater Lines

The freshwater lines you use for bathing, washing dishes, and drinking water must be completely flushed out prior to storage. Leaving water in the lines provides a dark, damp environment for mold to flourish. It also prevents the lines from freezing, bursting, and leaking if you are storing the RV in a cold environment.

Use a Dehumidifier or Mold Air Purifier

Your Orange County mold inspection team also recommends using a dehumidifier or mold air purifier to keep your RV fungus-free during storage. If you do not have access to outlets, look into battery-operated models. You could also use a mold air purifier in conjunction with a charcoal dehumidifier that does not require batteries or electricity to operate. Depending on the size of your RV, several charcoal dehumidifiers might be necessary.
