With the new year, many people are thinking about their resolutions. Most resolutions are highly personal, but do not necessarily involve the home. If you are stuck on your resolutions, consider adding these courtesy of your Los Angeles mold inspectors

Resolution #1: Monitor the Humidity Level

When you live in a temperate, humid region of the county, monitoring the humidity level can become a year-round job. If the level hits 60% or above, it creates an environment for mold to flourish. Most mold strains require dark, damp conditions to thrive and reproduce in as little as 48 hours. By keeping up with the humidity and making adjustments as needed, such as using dehumidifiers throughout your home, you’ll avoid mold growth. You’ll also enjoy a more comfortable residence.

Resolution #2: Keep the Gutters Clean

Gutters clogged with leaves, twigs, animal nests, seeds, and other debris do not allow rainwater to flow away from your home. Instead, water backs up under roof shingles, causing wood rot and mold growth. Water can also spill over the sides of the gutters and pool around your home’s foundation, resulting in basement water damage. Cleaning the gutters at least twice a year reduces these risks that can result in structural damage and allergy flare-ups. Depending on how many trees surround your residence, consider having gutter guards installed. Also known as leaf guards, these perforated metal products keep large pieces of debris out of your gutters to help water flow efficiently.

Resolution #3: Check For Plumbing Leaks Often

Plumbing leaks under sinks, in ceilings, and in walls provide ideal environments for mold growth, since they are dark and increasingly damp. Familiarizing yourself with the signs of hidden leaks helps you schedule timely plumbing services, such as brownish spots on the walls and ceilings, and musty odors. You’ll also want to check under all household sinks and around the toilet(s) about once a month to see if leaks are present. Not only will you sidestep serious water damage and mold growth with this practice, you’ll conserve water and reduce your monthly utility costs.
